The Healing Power of Laughter
Greetings! I’m Tristan Riabo, Laughter Yoga Instructor. I’m dedicated to bringing the amazing benefits of laughter and belly breathing to the good people of North Alabama!
When we are stressed, our body releases adrenaline and cortisol; stress chemicals that cause imbalance and disease in the body. The sheer act of laughing (whether we are being genuine or we are “faking” it) releases endorphins, elevates the mood, relaxes our bodies, increases blood circulation and oxygenation, and enhances our immunity.
Laughter Yoga offers everyone the chance to decrease stress, fear and anxiety, and increase creativity, alertness and memory.
What Is Laughter Yoga?
Laughter Yoga is an innovative program that incorporates intentional laughter as a physical exercise to improve health and wellbeing. Just about everyone is capable of experiencing a big hearty laugh…and you don’t even need jokes or comedy to get yourself to that joyful place. Laughter Yoga was created based on this scientific knowledge: the body cannot distinguish between genuine and self-initiated laughter. Whether you are laughing at something truly hysterical, or you are making a conscious choice to laugh, the body and mind benefit from both types of laughter.
During a Laughter Yoga class, students initiate laughter as exercise through making eye contact and enacting a sense of playfulness. What begins as initiated intentional laughter soon gives way to hearty, genuine, contagious laughter.
Laughter Yoga is not a yoga class of postures! This practice needs no special exercise clothing or equipment, and requires very little physical ability. The only must have? A willingness to choose to laugh! Instead of postures like you might find in another yoga class, Laughter Yoga is laughter exercises that are mingled with pranayama (deep yogic breathing) and gentle stretches. Deep breathing deepens laughter, and the body and brain benefit from greater intake of oxygen.
Laughter Yoga was established in 1995 by an Indian medical physician. Today, the Laughter Movement has reached people in over 80 countries. Friends, family, co-workers, clients – people of all ages are introducing their network to the amazing and uplifting effects of Laughter Yoga.
Laughter Yoga has been featured in major news outlets such as The New York Times, Oprah Winfrey Show, The New Yorker, Los Angeles Times, TIME Magazine, National Geographic, Wall Street Journal, Daily Telegraph (UK), ABC news, CNN, and many others!
Watching a funny movie increases blood flow by 22 per cent which improves the condition of your heart and can help prevent heart attacks.
One minute of intense laughter from a good belly laugh sets your heart rate to the same level as 10 minutes on a rowing machine.
In one study of diabetics who had already suffered a heart attack, watching a single 30 minute comedy daily made them 5x less likely to suffer another heart attack.
Laughter stimulates circulation in your heart, lungs and muscles. Increases endorphins in the brain
When we laugh our brain produces endorphins, which are up to 500 times more effective at eliminating pain than morphine.
People who laugh often require significantly less pain medication after surgery then those who don’t laugh frequently.
10 to 15 minutes of laughter burns about 50 calories.
Laughter raises levels of disease-fighting immunoglobulins by 14%.
Laughter boosts your energy – Instantly increases IgA, a critical antibody which boosts your immune system. Enhances intake of oxygen-rich air.
Classes & Workshops
My first laughter yoga class! Earlier today I met, laughed with, acted silly with, and thoroughly enjoyed the oxygen rush of laughing for 20 minutes with a group of total strangers. We're now no longer strangers, and we all agree that, what happens a Laughter Yoga STAYS at Laughter Yoga (*wink*). It's easier than it sounds and I'm looking forward to the next one! Good job, Tristan Riabo!
Having witnessed a laughter yoga session, I must say that Tristan Riabo is a great teacher. Enthusiastic, clear, and practicing what she preaches. Within a short amount of time, the laughter that started as exercise became real, and the room was full of real laughter. I recommend it, especially if you are down or tense or just need a break.
I absolutely loved this! I had so much fun! It was an amazing experience and would highly recommend it to anyone who would like to feel good again. If you are tired of feeling the weight of the world on your shoulders and need relief, this is one way to do it. If you have resistance to meeting new people, this is a fantastic way to melt the walls. Tristan is a great instructor and it is obvious that she enjoys what she does. She provides a safe environment so that you can feel comfortable. I enjoyed this class immensely! If you keep an open mind, you will enjoy it too! This was great! Looking forward to the next one Tristan!
